Overview
General Studies & Malaysian National Subjects (Mata Pelajaran Umum – MPU) consist of units which every student enrolled in a public or private higher education institutions (PHEIs) are required to undertake effective October 2013 intake onwards.
- Those studies were known as MPW (Mata Pelajaran Wajib)
- This stipulation is gazetted in subsection 41 (4) Private Higher Education Act 1996 (Act 555) which states that the National Language shall be taught as a compulsory subject for the students if any course of study or a substantial part of any course of study in any private higher educational institution is conducted either in the national language, English Language or Arabic
- In relation to this, Department of Higher Education, Malaysian Ministry of Education Administrative Circular JPT / GS1000-606 JLD.1 (25) dated 27 June 2013 provided further explanation on the implementation of General Studies at PHEIs.
- All Malaysian and international students are compelled to enroll, undertake, attend and pass these units as a pre-requisite to the award of a certificate, diploma or degree
Courses for Diploma Studies
Currently, there are 11 courses under the General Studies, in which all of them are categorised from U1 to U4. All diploma students are required to take each course from U1 to U4. The total credit hours of General Studies courses should be 11 credit hours (or 10 credit hours for new students who registered on April 2020 onwards).
Below are the courses offered by Faculty of Communication, Visual art and Computing under the General Studies Cluster:
- U1 CATEGORY
- MPU2142 – Bahasa Melayu Komunikasi (Offered for international/ non-Malay citizens)
- U2 CATEGORY
- MPU2212 – Bahasa Kebangsaan A (Offered for Malay citizens who did not achieve credit for Bahasa Melayu in SPM)
Courses for Degree Studies
Currently, there are 12 courses under the General Studies for all degree students, in which all of them are categorised from U1 to U4. All degree students are required to take two courses from U1 and one course from each U2, U3 and U4. The total credit hours of General Studies courses should be 12 credit hours (or 10 credit hours for new students who registered on April 2020 onwards).
Below are the courses offered by Faculty of Communication, Visual art and Computing under the General Studies Cluster:

- Courses under the U1 Category are only offered during long semesters, and courses under the U2 category will be offered during both long and short semesters.
